Originally from Greenfield on the Gaspereau Mountain of Kings County, lived a real old time country life: Walk 1 mile to a one room school house, no indoor plumbing for many years, no telephone until the late sixties ( party line with 8 other people ), road became impassable in springtime and rarely plowed in winter, learned to fish at about 5 years old, started hunting at 10 ( 1st deer at age 15), learned how to handle a buck and swede saw to cut winter firewood, helped hand-scythe hay then raked it with a wooden rake and stooked it on the horse-drawn hay wagon. Learned how to build a brush lean-to with a fir-bough bed and a camp fire to keep warm under the stars.
Official conservation activities began over 20 years ago with a local wildlife association. Served as Vice President and President before resigning to start the Wildlife Habitat Advocates in 1994, along with family members: brother Barry, dad Keith, mom Beverley, wife Norma. Active in the Nova Scotia Public Lands Coalition for past 5 years. Designed and implemented Project Wild Apple, an award winning habitat revitalization project centered around the rehabilitation of old abandoned apple orchards. River Watch training in 1996.
